Education
PhD in Geochemistry
2018 - 2023
University of Edinburgh, UK
I studied how rare earth carbonates crystallise via nanoparticulate precursors to understand exactly how they incorporate various rare earth elements. I also experimentally reproduced the conditions under which economically important REE minerals form naturally to see how certain parameters would affect their mineralisation in deposits. A lay summary can be found here.

Experience
Creator / GIS and CAD modelling
2023 - Current
Producing 3D printed landscapes to custom specifications for both scientific and consumer purposes. From sourcing topographical data to creation of a digital model to providing a physical product. Customisation includes integration of GPS routes across landscape.
University Geosciences Teacher
2018 - 2022
University of Edinburgh, UK
Organised tutorials, leading practical labs and field courses for undergraduate and postgraduate students in my department. Part time.
Courses include: Ore Mineralogy, Petrology and Geochemistry |Principles in environment sustainability | Field Skills for geologists |Petroleum systems | Geoscience Outreach
Creator / Web Developer
Spring 2020
Created Name That Mineral, an online tool to help users identify minerals observed under microscope. Aimed to help undergraduate students develop petrology skills. Target audience have given positive feedback and the site sees 800 unique visitors per month only from word-of-mouth marketing.
Built with a friend, from scratch without templates, with the express purpose of learning to build a website.
Research and Development Consultant
2019 (5 months)
IndiNature, UK
Helped design and implement a method to determine the best binder for use in the company's product. The start-up was trialing hemp-based material to make boards for commercial purposes. Part time.
Geophysical Intern
2018 (3 months)
IFREMER, France
Studied the link between regional seismicity and the variation of the differential pressure in deep sea in the Cascadia Basin, Canada.
Modeled the sequence of events during the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake usage of GRACE satellite derived ocean bottom pressure data. Using MATLAB
Geological Mapping
2016 (2 months)
Kandy region, Sri Lanka
Tied-in the structural geology with the metamorphic history at both local (Victoria reservoir, Kandy region) and regional subcontinent scales.
The resulting map and analyses were used by the Sri Lankan Geological Survey to complete their records.
Geotechnical Intern
2015 (3 months)
Dragages, Hong Kong
Worked alongside the geotechnical team on a construction project involving a road tunnel through a mountain. I was entrusted with daily tunnel face mapping, temporary support estimations (location, amount and type) and instrumentation monitoring.
Automated the instrumentation data processing using VBA for Excel, which shortened a 4-hour weekly task to minutes. The program was used after my departure until the end of the project.
Fun Projects
Always healthy to have a side project or three going on
Name That Mineral
Online tool to help people better identify minerals seen under the microscope, both for thin sections and polished sections.
Doctor Appointment booking script
Available slots were rare and only released sporadically, hence the need to automate the process.
Watchmaking
Next up is the restoration of a gold-filled Dennison case damaged to base metal and the Waltham movement inside it
The Morris Minor
Engine oil blockage has been resolved, time to try and start it up
Full PhD Thesis
Crystallisation pathways of REE carbonates and the hydrothermal wall-rock mineralisation of economic REE fluorcarbonate and REE phosphate minerals
3D Modelling
Producing 3D printed landscapes and geological landmarks to custom order for both scientific and consumer purposes.
